    صَومُ المَنِيَّةِ لَهُ إِفطارُ

    Break your fast and fast, and break your fast in fear;

    death’s fast has its breaking.

And I am frightened by my peer, but am not afraid of

my dust; and in a companion’s nearness lies peril.

Who is like the pure earth, among whose children

are spring’s flowers and its fragrant meadow?

And it is as though, with its blossoms, time’s palm held

aloeswood whose fragrance pervades the lands.

They hasten toward treachery and harm,

yet they are clouds that shed no rain.

And one virtue of inanimate things is that

no sensation attends them, nor any desires.

The raven has taken a perch upon the hair-partings,

and I know full well that it will be made to fly away.
