    وَمِنَ البَوارِ مَهاً عَرَضنَ بَواري

    Blossoms, thought to come from the radiance of lights;

and ruin comes from oryx-maidens who appeared, wearing hearts away.

Fair ones, ensnaring hearts, as though they were

wide-eyed oryxes at Dawwar and wide-eyed maidens of Dawar.

These tethering-posts of the dwellings never knew

that I conceal my burning thirst within my breast.

As for the fabricators of lies about you, they found

a hearing; as for the yearning you inspire, it is aflame.

And when the fair maidens ensnare you, set out early,

like white she-camels following a camel calf.

They cherish a male calf at evening, while you merely

build on dark eyes with clear whites and charming conversation.

They toy with visitors as women gamblers do,

and when satisfied, they scatter them.

Like a herd of wild cattle—when you smell their musk,

then your heart's tangled branches stand as masts for sorrows.

So use a tender maiden's two bracelets and their rings

for nose-rings on riding camels that travel morning and night.

They trot in worn-out trappings, and above them

are human natures that purchase what is vile.

    وَلِتُعرَضَنَّ الخَيلُ بِالمِشوارِ

    Never complain: in complaint lies humiliation;

and let the horses be shown on the testing-ground.

I have sworn: lowing did not protect the wild beasts

among Shabah's hills and the yielding sand-dune.

The discerning man is frightened by gray hair, because it

keeps announcing a change of abode.

How wretched is animal life! No growing plant feels

sorrow over the blossoms that appear.

And it is as though whoever dwelt in the courtyard, once he departs

for the grave, had never lived in its vicinity.

Those vultures fly from their nests,

and fates come unexpectedly upon them from above.

    فَالراحُ مِنها وَالجُسومُ عَواري

    Surely all things lent are reclaimed;

so the palms of the hands are among them, and bodies lie bare.

Human forms in time are seen to have

an appearing and vanishing like bubbles.

They are mingled in it with others; what has passed

is other than what comes, while they flow onward.

Time's onslaught has baffled every challenger,

and struck al-Khalil with the mounted archer's arrows.

So beware—even if your raids range far among enemies—

of a fate that raided Abu al-Mighwar.

The omen-readers startled their omen-birds at forenoon,

    and calamities are death's gatherers.

If wealth-seekers pondered the passing of the cy-

-cles, they would not sit upon camel saddles.

The capable man shares the idle man's fate, and the frivolous

is like the vigilant, and the bold like the coward.

And it is said that the passage of nights will make

a standing mountain like a swelling, surging sea.

The decrees have run their course among creatures and been fulfilled,

truly, with walls or without walls.
