The soul draws far away, so its whereabouts are unknown.

And in the dust, by my life, the body crumbles.

And we know that, in the end, we are destined

To pass away—so why rancor and envy?

The neck enjoys ease or is made to suffer, and is overtaken

By death’s ravages—then neither necklace nor rope remains.

The gazelle and its fawn encounter a fatal stroke

From their doom, as do the lion cub and the lion.

And we are in a world whose beginnings were fashioned

Upon corruption—so it is folly for us to say, 'They have become corrupt.'

They marketed themselves through obscenity and ignorance, since they sold well

Among fools, while in the eyes of reason they are unsalable.
