The world opposes us in displeasure and contentment.

So if a person hastens, it tells him, 'Slow down.'

It is water; had I approached it with what I know,

I would have told myself, 'Coming to it was folly.'

For it has not cherished a child, nor honored a young man,

Nor shown mercy to an old man, nor revered a middle-aged man.

We crossed rough terrain toward level ground, seeking

Wealth, but we found not even a little, nor level ground.

So do not expect good from the days, even once,

For they do not deserve to be thought capable of good.
