Behold, the gazelles are indeed deluded,

hoping to live forever after the lions of Tarj.

And the highest in rank of those you see on earth

lives his whole life a slave to mouth and loins.

And souls’ love of this world is a delusion

that has kept people in tumult and disorder.

And glory in a spear and shield

is surely more evident than in a pen and scroll.

Nor would I choose to be the king to whom

wealth is brought from tolls and tribute.

So leave your two companions, Arabs and non-Arabs,

for your two allies, camel pack-saddle and horse saddle.

    وَإِلّا فَالكَواكِبُ خَيرُ سُرجِ

    Your lamp in the darkness is a predator’s eye;

or else the stars are the best of lamps.

Whenever you lay bare the character of humankind,

you find as much injustice and sin as you wish.

Grudges that have never ceased since before Noah,

over trifling flocks of sheep and herds of camels,

drove Abel’s brother to kill him

and sowed discord between a Muʿtazilite and a Murjiʾite.

And they betrayed Luqman’s love for Luqaym

on nights when acacia trees were altered at Sharj.

So manage your livelihood tactfully, and bear harm

from those you befriend, narrow-eyed and wide-eyed alike.

For the lions are followed by wolves

and ravens, some one-eyed and some lame.

Your journey through the lands brings less harm

with the two bands of pale wolves and pied ravens.

And many a lion has been deceived—a king

among monarchs—by a woman with jewels and a jewel box.
