I see that Kafr Tab's digging cannot reach water,

while the Euphrates has spared Balis the need to dig.

Such is the course of sustenance: one valley has no moisture,

another overflows, and another has a broad well.

I have experienced humanity, destitution, and wealth,

the ease of bedding, and hurrying along with travelers.

The best of God's lands is one with few inhabitants,

where food is not far from your empty hand.

A dweller in Iraq or Persia suffers—

or in Syria—what no desert-dweller has faced.

Turn away, then, from Eve's children, Adam's offspring,

to dwell among dark-lipped, white, and tawny gazelles.

    وَهَل وَضَعَ الأَثقالَ دَهرُكَ عَن شَفرِ

    In your world, toil for its sake is unavoidable;

has your age ever lifted burdens from anyone?

Does not the thicket's lion, though made king

over wild beasts, seek prey with fang and claw?

And when you use cups of gold,

you do wrong: a vessel of brass suffices you.

My soul has indeed dwelt in its body against its will,

and I found it restless with aversion.

If you gain no abundance of wealth, seek aid

from abundant reason, for it is more fruitful than riches.

And if a youth's reason is not with him

from infancy, he can neither cut to good purpose nor cut to ruin.

    لَهُ الوَيلُ أَيُّ الناسِ خالٍ مِنَ الكُفرِ

    A misguided man calls whoever disagrees an unbeliever;

woe to him! Who among mankind is free of unbelief?

We have ended up with deception, and some of us distrust

others; even the eye mistrusts its own eyelid.

And what the Jew said is not established,

except that it was set down in writing in the book.

We have relapsed—I do not mean forgiveness; rather,

I mean a relapse after recovery, not the generosity of pardon.

When a mother fears death for a son,

then, O Umm Dafr—Mother of Stench—you need not fear for Dafr.
