O my world, go away and seek someone else.

For you have visited; would that you had not.

Time was a vessel, worthy neither of praise

nor of blame, in reason's judgment.

I think the passing omen-bird of al-Izmim cried out

of the tribe's departure in the desert of Zamm.

If Bakr does wrong, beware of Amr,

for both are born of a father and a mother.

Fear the creatures of this earth, and beware

of butting from horned and hornless alike.

In every nature there are traits of malice,

though not all of them possess venom.

What fault have lions, when they were fashioned

and their food was made of what they make bleed?

For they were formed to rend and bite,

as fire was formed to grow.

A light unseen by eyes blind from birth,

and speech lost in the ears of the deaf.

By your life, I take no joy in Eid al-Fitr,

nor Eid al-Adha, nor Ghadir Khumm.

How many a misguided man has flaunted his Shiite allegiance

to claim kinship in the lands of Qumm!

Time has never ceased, beyond all doubt,

preparing mutilation for the proud, high-bridged nose.

O nurse of the boy, you blame him

for hurting you; then suckle a snake and embrace it.

Had you been guided aright, you would not have nourished an embryo,

nor borne a child, nor been burdened with care.

Your closest kin would have thought little

of your rising from childbed after bearing a premature, not fully formed child.

You asked about truths, though they are secret,

and the teller fears you will divulge them.

How can a meaning become clear to minds

when a veiling decree from its Lord lies upon it?

    I hold—if I could trust you—knowledge of a matter

that a concealer has hidden from the ignorant.

And the Name is invoked when a wretch pours out water,

as he eyes Paradise, fearful of leaving it unspoken.

I saw the truth as a pearl concealed

in a vast sea of human error.

I urge all people, male and female,

to worship well and follow a worthy example.

A stranger, though far away, may be found

dearer to you than a maternal or paternal uncle.

Whenever the white one gleams, it keeps watch

for folk beneath a dark-green expanse.

We are bound for a far-off goal,

as though swimming through the depths of a sea.
