هِيَit is النَفسُthe soul عَنّاهاhas afflicted it مِنَfrom الدَهرِTime فاجِعُa bringer of grief
بِرُزءٍwith bereavement وَغَنّاهاand sang to it لِتُطرِبَso it might rejoice ساجِعُa cooing bird
It is the soul: Time’s scourge has afflicted it
with bereavement, and a cooing bird has sung to delight it.
وَلَمand did not تَدرِit know مَنfrom أَنّىwhere تُعَدُّare allotted لَناfor us الخُطىthe steps
وَلاnor أَينَwhere تُقضىare decreed لِلجَنوبِfor the sides المَضاجِعُthe resting places
And it does not know whence our steps are allotted,
nor where resting places are decreed for our sides.
وَماand not هَذِهِthese الساعاتُthe hours إِلّاexcept أَراقِمٌspeckled serpents
وَماand not شَجُعَتgrew bold فيin لَمسِهِنَّtouching them الأَشاجِعُthe knuckles
And these hours are nothing but speckled serpents,
and no knuckles have dared to touch them.
أَرىI see الناسَthe people أَنفاسَbreaths التُرابِthe dust فَظاهِرٌso one emerges
إِلَيناtoward us وَمَردودٌand one sent back إِلىto الأَرضِthe earth راجِعُreturning
I see people as breaths of dust: one emerges
before us, and another is sent back, returning to the earth.
شَرِبتُI drank سِنيِّmy years الأَربَعينَthe forty تَجَرُّعاًgulp by gulp
فَياso, O مَقِراًsomething bitter ماnot شُربُهُdrinking it فيَّin me ناجِعُbeneficial
I have drunk my forty years, gulp by gulp:
ah, what a bitter draught—drinking it does me no good!
جَهِلناwe were ignorant فَحَيٌّso one alive فيin الضَلالَةِerror مَيِّتٌdead
أَخوa companion of سَكرَةٍa stupor فيin غَيِّهِhis delusion لاnot يُراجِعُturns back
We have been ignorant: one alive in error is dead,
a companion of stupor, never turning back from his delusion.
يَذُمُّhe censures إِذاwhen لاقاكَhe meets you يَقظانَawake هاجِعاًasleep
وَحَمدٌand praise لِذِئبِfor the wolf of الخَرقِthe vast desert يَقظانُawake هاجِعُasleep
He finds fault when he meets you awake, though himself asleep;
yet praise to the desert wolf—a wakeful sleeper.
