دَمعٌtears عَلىover ماwhat يَفوتُslips away مُنسَكِبٌstreaming
ماnot الكَأسُthe cup مِنamong هِمَّتيmy concerns وَلاnor الجامُthe goblet
Tears stream over what slips away.
The cup is not my concern, nor the goblet.
نَحنُwe ذِئابٌwolves ضَرّاؤُناour cover مَدَدٌsupport
لاnot أُسدٌlions وَالثِيابُand the garments آجامُthickets
We are wolves; our cover is our support,
not lions—and garments are thickets.
وَالناسُand people شَتّىdiverse جَرىran بِهِمwith them قَدَرٌfate
إِذاwhen طَغىran wild لَمdid not يَعُقهُhinder it إِلجامُbridling
And people are diverse; fate has borne them along:
when it runs wild, no bridle can check it.
وَعالَميand my world فيin سَفاهَةٍfolly وَخَنىًand obscenity
عالِمُهُits scholar بِالظُنونِwith conjectures رَجّامُa habitual hurler
And my world is steeped in folly and obscenity;
its scholar hurls conjectures.
قَدindeed كَتَبَwrote اللَهُGod لِلرَدىfor death صُحُفاًscrolls
وَبانَand became clear نَقطٌdots لَهاfor them وَإِعجامُand distinguishing letter-dots
God has written scrolls for death,
and their dots and distinguishing marks are plain.
فَياso, O سَحابَcloud of المَنونِdeath سِلتِyou poured بِناupon us
هَلis there? لَكِfor you أُخرىthe end of الزَمانِtime إِنجامُa pause in rainfall
So, O cloud of death, you have poured upon us:
will you let up at time's end?
تَواصَلَتcontinued unbroken مِنكِfrom you بَينَناamong us دِيَمٌsteady rains
وَزيدَand was added فيهاin them سَحٌّa downpour وَإِثجامُand persistent rainfall
Your steady rains have fallen among us unbroken,
and downpours and unceasing rain have been added to them.
كَمmany a أَسوَدٍmighty lord مِنfrom أَمامِهِin front of him حُجُبٌcurtains
عَلَيهِupon him ضَيفُthe guest of الأَذاةِharm هَجّامُan insistent assailant
Many a mighty lord, with curtains before him,
is assailed by the intrusive guest of harm.
وَأَحجَمَand held back القِرنُthe adversary عَنfrom فَوارِسِهِhis horsemen
وَماbut there is no لِرَيبِfor the ravages of المَنونِdeath إِحجامُholding back
And the adversary held back from his horsemen,
but death's ravages never hold back.
تِلكَthose بِلادُlands of النَباتِvegetation ماnot سُقِيَتwere watered
وَالغَيمُand the clouds فَوقَabove الرِمالِthe sands سَجّامُpouring copiously
Those plant-bearing lands have gone unwatered,
while clouds pour down over the sands.
