وَلاand no بُدَّescape أَنّيthat I سالِكٌwill travel ذَلِكَthat الفَجّاthe pass
Every rider has made for a single pass,
and I must inevitably travel that pass.

And a loving mother and a dove are alike:
one nourished a child in his cradle, the other a squab.
فَلاso do not تَبكُرَنset out at dawn يَوماًone day بِكَفِّكَin your palm مُديَةٌa knife

So do not set out at dawn one day, a knife in your hand,
to kill a chick that toddles about in its home.

In his earthly life, a swimmer in deep waters turned
longingly toward the shore, after reaching the midst of the deep.

And he hoped for things that were not close
to him; events passed him by while he hoped.

He hopes for a livelihood—who can guarantee him its continuance?
And will Time spare the poor man and what he hoped for?
فَلاso do not تَبتَئِسgrieve لِلرِزّقِover sustenance إِنif بَضَّit trickles فاتِراًfeebly

So do not grieve over sustenance if it trickles feebly,
nor exult if your sustenance wells up or pours in torrents.
أَعُوّامَO swimmers بَحرٍin a sea إِنif أُصِبتُمyou are stricken فَهَيِّنٌthen it is a small matter

O swimmers in a sea, if you are stricken, it is a small matter;
and if you escape, God, your Lord, has saved you.
ضَلِلتُمyou went astray فَهَلso is there مِنany كَوكَبٍstar يُهتَدىone may be guided بِهِby it

فَقَدfor indeed طالَit has been long ماthat جَنَّhas shrouded الظَلامُthe darkness وَماand that دَجّىhas deepened
You have lost your way: is there any star to guide you?
For darkness has long shrouded us and deepened.

So do not trust the pious man to refrain from what
brings harm, even if he visits mosques or makes the pilgrimage.
وَلاand do not تَقبَلواaccept مِنfrom كاذِبٍa liar مُتَسَوِّقٍa peddler

And accept nothing from a lying peddler
who schemed to defend doctrines and argued for them.
فَذَلِكَfor that man غاويastray الصَدرِat heart قَلبيmy heart كَقَلبُهُlike his heart

For that man is astray at heart; my heart is like his:
whenever admonition fills his ear, he spits it out.
وَإِنَّand indeed لِأَجسامِfor the bodies of الأَنامِhumankind غَرائِزاًinstincts

إِذاwhen حَرَّكَتthey stirred لِلشَرِّtoward evil طالِبَهُits seeker لَجّاhe persisted
And human bodies have instincts:
when they rouse the seeker of evil, he persists.
فَلاso not آسَI grieve لِلدُنِّياfor this world إِذاwhen هِيَit زايَلَتdeparts

فَماfor not كُنتُI was فيهاin it لاneither سِناناًa spearhead وَلاnor زُجّاa spear's butt-spike
So I do not mourn this world when it departs,
for in it I was neither a spearhead nor a spear's butt-spike.

And indeed it was created crooked, like its crescent moon,
which will remain crooked, along with it, until Resurrection.

It is all the same to a soul whose conscience is corrupt
whether it visits Mecca for the rites or Wajj.
فَبِالطائِفِfor in Ta'if الراحُwine الكُمَيتُdark-red سَلافَةًpure first-run wine

For in Ta'if there is dark-red wine, pure first pressing:
when it courses through a quiet man's belly, he flares up.
فَكَمand how many مِنof قَتيلٍa slain man غادَرَتit left behind وَمُكَلَّمٍand a wounded man

How many slain men it has left behind, and wounded men,
in pain, after the slain man whose head was gashed!

Diluted wine: if it mingled—supposing him rational—
with Thabir, he would crumble in folly and quake.

I have seen a young man like an old camel, grazing awhile;
but if burdens touch his withers, he cries out.
