    It is folly for me to wish you to agree with me,

    when the doubts within my own soul are at odds.

    فَاِذهَب لِعادِكَ أَستَمَرَّ لِعادي

    Boasting of abundance is not in an honest man's nature;

    so go your accustomed way; I shall keep to mine.

    Had I a cloud, it would give its water freely,

    without a flash of lightning or a peal of thunder.

    When you threaten, break your word, forgiving a lapse

    by an offender; and give without a promise.

    I find myself with a stature and a fortune,

    both dwarfish, but an ambition like ʿĀd's.

    The body sinks by nature toward the dust,

    and its straining to rise is plain to see.

    And I think my soul, when it loses its body,

    will face its deeds before resurrection.

    Never, while you live, drink the blood of a white one,

    straight-haired, nor of black ones that appear curly-haired.

    وَسَعادَةٌ لَكَ هِجرَةٌ لِسُعادِ

    For one like you, ease lies in leaving Daʿd far behind;

    and happiness for you is parting from Suʿād.

    Strength of arm has never attained its aims

    unless God has aided it with success.
