After one wife, he married three more,

and told his wife, “A quarter of me suffices you.”

So he satisfies her if she is content with sustenance,

and stones her if she turns toward a lover.

And whoever takes two wives has not sought

the path of justice in five and a quarter.

And your reason, O man of seventy, is feeble,

as though in your games you were a boy of seven.

    وَطَبعُكَ في الخِيانَةِ مِثلُ طَبعي

    You have done wrong—and we are all guilty wrongdoers;

and your nature in treachery is like my own.

It delights you that another’s dwelling stands empty,

when you gain access to a wife and a home.

But for that, no one would carry for shooting

a hunter’s broad-headed arrows and bows of nabʿ wood.
