Time has passed, and the living soul has been enamored

of evil since before Abel and Cain.

If people sifted to rid themselves of dross,

nothing would remain in the sieves.

Or if fire were told, “Single out whoever did wrong,” it would devour

their bodies, and refuse to consume their garments.

Do they await anything but the flood that will destroy them,

as is said, or the birds in flocks?

So let me not find you base among men of stature,

and be noble among the short-statured folk.

Glory to Him who inspired all kinds of beings

with something leading to madness and derangement:

the glances of eyes, the passions of souls, and the inclining

of lips toward kissing and giving kisses.
