Let what you now await distract you
May what you now await distract you
from faults laid bare and a friend reproached.
From blaming and scolding a friend.
فَماfor ... has not أَذنَبَsinned الدَهرُtime الَّذيwhich أَنتَyou لائِمٌblaming
وَلَكِنbut rather بَنوthe sons of حَوّاءَEve جارواacted unjustly وَأَذنَبواand sinned
For time, which you blame, has not sinned;
It wasn’t Time you should blame,
rather, Eve's sons have acted unjustly and sinned.
But Eve’s sons—they strayed and sinned.

Death will storm into the oppressor's house,
The sword will invade the oppressor’s home
even were it pitched beside al-Simāk.
Though he’s sheltered at Mount Semak.
وَقَدand indeed كانَhe was يَهوىfond of الطَعنَspear-thrusting أَمّاas for قَناتُهُhis lance
فَذاتُthen possessed of لَمىًdusky lips وَالخِرصُand the spearhead كَالنابِlike a fang أَشنَبُgleaming white
And he once loved spear-thrusting; as for his lance,
His passion was piercing with spearpoints.
it was dusky-lipped, and its spearhead gleamed white as a fang.
His she-camel had smooth skin; his sword curved like fangs.
وَدِرعُand a coat of mail حَديدٍiron عِندَهُto him دِرعُa shift كاعِبٍa budding maiden

And iron mail, to him, was a budding maiden's shift,
His coat of chain-mail was like a coat of favors,
out of love; and war was named Hind and Zaynab.
Yet named for war—Hind or Zainab.

And he crosses waste after waste upon his camel-saddle,
He wrapped himself in waves of onslaught
when the pale camels are urged onward and the swift steeds led alongside.
When racers raced and swords crossed.

He has a brook of watered steel; if he sets it flowing
His blade, if he drew it, poured blood
over an opponent's head, a rivulet surges with blood.
From the skulls of warriors like wine from a pitcher.

And the back that death has bent cannot be straightened
Exile bent his back. His glance was askance.
by a Rudaynī spear's straightness or a courser with arched legs.
He stood like one Rome threw down.
