سِواءٌall the same عَلىto هَذاthis الحِمامِdeath أَضَيغَماًwhether a lion
أَزارَit sent to visit المَناياthe fates of death أَمor تَوَفّىit took in death بِهاthrough them دِرصاa mouse-pup
To this death it is all the same whether a lion
It sends to meet death, or a mouse-pup it carries off.
فَإِنso if تَترُكواyou leave alone المَوتَdeath الطَبيعيَّnatural يَأتِكُمit comes to you
وَلَمand did not تَستَعينواyou seek aid لاneither حُساماًa keen sword وَلاnor خِرصَاa spear
If you leave natural death alone, it will come to you,
Without your seeking aid from either keen sword or spear.
وَكانَand there was لَكُمfor you حِرصٌeagerness عَلىfor العَيشِlife بَيِّنٌplain
فَماso what لَكُمis with you حِمتُمyou circled عَلىaround ضِدِّهِits opposite حِرصاeagerly
And your eagerness for life was plain;
Why, then, have you circled so eagerly around its opposite?
