    In their ignorance, humankind has gone too far in its claims,

    until they claimed to be lords over creation.

    Their devotion remained bound to pleasures

    throughout life, though these people have no understanding.

    لَها بَحَثِّيَ تَقريبٌ وَإِخبابُ

    Swifter than horses are the hopes I steer;

    at my urging, they canter and trot.

    The soul has power to tend its dwelling

    until earth's door is shut over it.

    So treat your women, if you are granted power,

    likewise; and beware, for fate has its means.

    And many a veiled wanton has been unchaste, while faith was kept

    by a freeborn woman with no cloak to hide her from sight.

    هَذا المَحَلُّ بِما تَخشاهُ مِربابُ

    Harm from time is coupled for us with further harm;

    this abode is a constant haunt of what you fear.

    فَهَل لِما يَكرَهُ الإِنسانُ إِغبابُ

    Good visits us at intervals, or keeps away from us;

    but is there any respite from what humankind hates?

    وَأَجمَلوا فَإِذا الأَعداءُ أَحبابُ

    Men who did good and were hated have indeed done wrong;

    and they acted graciously—then behold, enemies are friends.

    إِنَّ النَسيمَ بِنَفعِ الروحِ هَبّابُ

    So help your brother despite the weakness you feel;

    indeed, the breeze blows to benefit the spirit.
