أَتَرغَبُDo you desire فيin الصيتِfame بَينَamong الأَنامِhumankind
أَتَرغَبُ في الصيتِ بَينَ الأَنامِ
وَكَمAnd how many خَمَلَfell into obscurity النابِهُthe distinguished man الصَيِّتُrenowned
وَكَم خَمَلَ النابِهُ الصَيِّتُ
Do you desire fame among humankind?
And how many a distinguished, renowned man has fallen into obscurity!
وَحَسبُAnd enough for الفَتىthe young man أَنَّهُthat he مائِتٌdestined to die
وَحَسبُ الفَتى أَنَّهُ مائِتٌ
وَهَلAnd does يَعرِفُknow الشَرَفَhonor المَيِّتُthe dead man
وَهَل يَعرِفُ الشَرَفَ المَيِّتُ
And it is enough for a man that he must die;
And does a dead man know honor?
