قَبيحٌshameful مَقالُthe saying of الناسِthe people جِئناهُwe came to him مَرَّةًonce
فَكانَand was قَليلاًscant خَيرُهُhis generosity لَمdid not يُعاوِنِhelp
It is shameful when people say, “We came to him once,
but his generosity was scant; he gave no help.”
إِذاif أَنتَyou لَمdo not تُعطِgive الفَقيرَthe poor man فاthen do not (apparently فلا) يَبِنlet appear
لَهُto him مِنكَfrom you وَجهُthe face of المُعرِضِone who turns away المُتَهاوِنِthe indifferent one
If you give nothing to the poor man, do not show
him the face of one who turns away in indifference.
وَلاand do not تَأمَنَنَّever feel safe from الحادِثاتِcalamities فَإِنَّهاfor they

And never feel safe from calamities, for they
make the lions of the forest like tomcats.
