If the hawk that hunts far afield is fortunate,
its sustenance reaches it while it is in the nest.
وَيَحويand acquires الفَتىthe young man بِالجَدِّby good fortune مالَthe wealth of عَدُوِّهِhis enemy

And had Tayy been ill-fated, Hatim would have been assigned
to another tribe, such as Taghlib or Bakr.
وَماand no أَمَدٌlimit فيin الدَهرِtime يُبلَغُis reached مَرَّةًonce

And no limit ever reached in the course of time
is farther than what a person has attained in thought.
كُلواeat طَيِّباًwholesome food فَالطيبُfor the goodness فيماin what طَعِمتُمُyou have eaten

Eat wholesome food, for the goodness in what you have eaten
makes sincere gratitude manifest upon your lips.
وَقَدand already لاحَhas appeared شَيبٌgray hair فيon الذَراthe crowns فَصَحَوتُمُso you have sobered
وَصَحَّand it became clear لَكُمto you أَنَّthat الشَبابَyouth مِنَa kind of السُكرِdrunkenness
And gray hair has appeared upon your crowns, so you have sobered,
and it has become clear to you that youth is a kind of drunkenness.
فَلاso do not تَنسَوُواyou forget اللَهَGod الَّذيwho لَوif هُديتُمُyou were guided
إِلىto رُشدِكُمyour right course مازالَwould never cease مِنكُمby you عَلىin ذِكرِremembrance
So do not forget God, who, if you were guided
to your right course, would always remain in your remembrance.
وَلاand do not تُنكِرواdeny حَقُّthe due of الكَبيرِthe Great One فَإِنَّهُfor it
لَأَوجَبsurely more binding مِمّاthan what تَعرِفونَyou acknowledge مِنَof النُكرِwrongdoing
And do not deny the Great One his due, for it
is surely more binding than the wrongdoing you acknowledge.
