Forgive, and tell the young man openly what you mean,

and let them not say, “He is a backbiter.”

If Time unsettles us with its deeds,

then all of us distrust Time.

So pardon it and do not reproach it; for many an

Awf, many an Attab, has perished through it.

If the wayward were struck with the sword, not

with the whip, as punishment for drinking wine, they would not repent.

Whoever's form has donned that wine

is clad in the wrath of God.

We slept in gray-haired age—did there visit us

a returning phantom of youth's first days?

Far from it! It cannot be carried toward us

by horses' saddles or camels' packsaddles.
