Have you not seen Sirius al-ʿAbūr blazing
Have you not seen poetry take flight, ignited
at a lofty height no fire-seekers have reached?
To soaring heights no commentaries can reach?
تَبارَكَblessed is رَبُّthe Lord of الناسِmankind لَيسَthere is no لِماfor what أَبىHe refused
مُريدٌone who wills وَلاand no دونَin the way of الَّذيthat which شاءَHe willed حابِسُone who bars
Blessed is the Lord of mankind: for what He refuses
Blessed is He who controls all things; none can refuse
there is none to will it, nor any to bar what He wills.
What He desires, nor stop what He releases.

Swords bear dark blood in two forms, flowing and dried,
Swords with yearning blades both scabbing and bloodied;
and horses bear water upon them, wet and dry.
Horses on whom both wet and dry saddlecloth lie.
وَيَعبِسُand frowns وَجهُthe face of الدَهرِTime وَالمَرَءُwhile man ضاحِكٌis laughing
وَيَضحَكُand it laughs هُزءاًin mockery وَالوُجوهُwhile faces عَوابِسُare frowning
And Time's face frowns while man laughs,
While Time's face glows dark and man laughs lighthearted,
and it laughs in mockery while faces frown.
Mockingly, though faces about him storm and sigh.

فَأَفحَمَso it silenced them حَتّىuntil لَيسَthere is no فيamong القَومِthe people نابِسُone uttering a word
It loathed people's speech about what troubled it,
He sickened of men's talk and all their confusion,
so it struck them dumb, till none among the people speaks.
Till he silenced them - no voice now dares arise.

Cloaks of disgrace are raiment for the son of Adam;
Chilly clothes are but loans to man, my God!
by my life, garments have indeed failed him.
Truly, they have wearied him, their wear and guise!
