هَلhas ...? آنَthe time has come لِلقَيدِfor the fetter أَنto تَفُكَّهyou undo it
إِنَّindeed قَبيحَvile الفِعالِdeeds حِكِّهan itch
Has the time come for you to undo the fetter?
Will chains ever free themselves?
Indeed, vile deeds are an itch.
Evil deeds are truly ugly
بِكُلِّin every أَرضٍland أَميرُa ruler سوءٍof evil
يَضرِبُmints لِلناسِfor the people شَرَّthe basest سِكِّهcoinage
In every land there is an evil ruler,
In every land an evil ruler
Minting the basest coinage for the people.
Strikes the people with the worst of plans
قَدindeed كَثُرَhas grown widespread الغِشُّdeceit وَاِستَعانَتand have sought help
بِهِthrough it الأَشِدّاءُthe strong وَالأَرِكَّهand the weak
Deceit has grown rife, and recourse is had
Deceit has spread, the powerful
To it by the strong and the weak.
Rely on it, and the weak
فَماso not تَرىyou see مِسكَةًa piece of musk بِحالٍin any circumstance

So never, in any circumstance, do you see a piece of musk
You see no honest person
Unless it has been mixed with compound perfume.
Whose rope is not twisted by fraud

Nor has any questioner found a learned man
No learned man finds one
Who dispels his doubt with clear proofs.
To clarify doubts for him

How many a horseman sets out at dawn for the thickets,
How many horsemen attack innocents
And many a horseman takes his weapons as his guide!
And how many follow their example
فَخَلِّهِمso leave them وَالَّذيand what أَرادواthey desired

وَحُلَّand settle بِالقُدسِin Jerusalem أَوor بِمَكَّهin Mecca
So leave them with what they desired,
Leave them be, and what they wanted
And settle in Jerusalem or Mecca.
Settle in Jerusalem or Mecca instead
صَكَّهُمُstruck them الدَهرُTime صَكَّthe striking of أَعمىa blind man

Time struck them as a blind man strikes;
Time has stamped them, the stamp of a blind man
The hands of annihilation write its writ.
The hands of oblivion will write their stamp

وَبِكَّةُand Bakkah المُسلِمينَof the Muslims بَكَّهa crushing throng
Yathrib has indeed reproached them,
Yathrib has turned against them
And the Muslims' Bakkah is a crushing throng.
And the weeping of Muslims laments them
