The prince grew angry at reproach; yet do you see

anyone who escapes with his honor unsullied?

I am ignorant, save in one matter:

this world of mine is not fit for fellowship.

So beware of them, whether black or white,

or brown, classed somewhere between those two.

And sturdy she-camels, freed from your abuse, are happier than

fair young maidens and beautiful women long unwed.

Drowsiness in the eye is praised; but thinness

at the anklets is the sorrow of lovely, companionable women.

    فَمَتّى لِحاقي بِالجَواري الكُنَّسِ

    As for maidens retreating into seclusion, they elude me;

so when shall I catch up with the coursing, retreating stars?

And outward form is not character: how often has the wild bull disdained

being hunted by a beast of prey with a snub nose!
