مَنwhoever كانَwas تَحتَbeneath لِسانِهِhis tongue مَخبوءاhidden
مَن كانَ تَحتَ لِسانِهِ مَخبوءا
He has indeed gained manifest good among people—
He who conceals his words has truly gained
the man who remained hidden beneath his tongue.
Good fortune in his dealings with mankind.

Speech has incurred sin, whereas silence has not,
Speech leads to sin, but silence never harmed
as a rule, been such as to incur sin.
The ignorant, however intertwined.

If a man rises above you, how often has
If an enemy exalts himself o’er you,
a mountain been surmounted by a follower of strife!
How often is he but a standard raised—

Wait! Is it from a plague you fled? And do you see
Flee from the plague of strife without delay!
in this world anything but a plague-stricken dwelling?
Do you see aught in life that is not razed?

Noblewomen are taken captive, and the dark-red wine they drink
Nobility is blamed, and drunkenness
is found purchased for the basest drinker.
Will leave the drinker’s pain exacerbated.

The coarse cloak’s companion will have his equal
The cloak’s pledge will become like his one day—
in a king, whose blended perfume will be left behind.
A king, his fragrance left alone wafted.
