And I found Adam's son beguiled,

By what he gains and what he newly acquires.

He grew attached to his world before weaning,

And kept toiling until he grew senile.

And his eye rises toward its new riches,

Yet better for its beholder if his eye were injured.

He delights in it while it favors him,

As though its changes had never been known.

And he sheds his tears out of love for it,

But tears shed do not bring good fortune.

And how many passed one day by his grave—

Fair faces—yet his eye did not look up.

Does he seek water from a dried-up well

And leave abundant water for whoever scoops it up?

And he has earned none of his Lord's favor,

    But his crimes he commits,

Like a worker for a people who has done his work badly,

And there is no doubt that he will depart.

And his sustenance has come to our heedless man,

Though he has practiced no trade for his food.

O gazelle of the plain, fear the archers,

And let no lush, glistening meadow deceive you.
