مِنamong أَحسَنِthe finest of الدَهرِtime وَقتاًa moment ساعَةٌan hour سَلِمَتwas spared
مِنَfrom الشُرورِevils وَفيهاand in it صاحِبٌa companion حَدَثُyoung
Among time's finest moments is an hour spared
The finest time is an hour when we're spared
from evils, with a young companion in it.
From evil deeds, and a friend is near,
أُعجَبI am amazed بِدَهرِكَat your time أولاهُits beginning وَآخِرِهِand its end
إِنَّindeed الزَمانَtime قَديمٌancient سِنُّهُits age حَدَثُyoung
I marvel at your time, its beginning and its end:
Marvel at life's beginning and end-
indeed, time is ancient, yet its age is young.
Time itself is ancient, though each day seems new,
أَودىbrought ruin رَداهُits deadly ruin بِأَجيالٍupon generations فَكَمand how many حُفِرَتwere dug
أَجداثُgraves قَومٍof people وَلَمand not يُحفَرwas dug لَهُfor it جَدَثُa grave
The death it brings has carried off generations; how many have been dug—
It has claimed generations-so many graves
graves of people—yet no grave has been dug for it.
Dug for others, while his own remains un-dug.
