Religion and unbelief, tales recounted, and the Fur-

qan that declares, and the Torah and the Gospel.

    فَهَل تَفَرَّدَ يَوماً بِالهُدى جيلُ

    In every generation, falsehoods are professed as faith;

so has any generation ever stood alone in guidance?

And whoever receives good fortune's writ from a decree

on high has no recorded grant of immortality.

And the worthy are ever subject to disparagement,

while the petty receive exaltation and reverence.

Were horses gladdened that their swiftest steeds were adorned

amid the processions with white forehead blazes and white leg markings?

Boasting is sought among us; none knows it

except humankind, and some speech is vilification.

So let wild beasts wear bliss: they have no footwear

to ward off the dust, nor any combing for their heads.

My haters, by my life, cannot bring about my death

through scheming, if a reprieve awaits me in the unseen.

    بَل لِلمَقاديرِ تَأخيرٌ وَتَعجيلُ

    Neither war destroys nor peace with the enemy protects;

rather, delay and hastening belong to fate.

And your praising a man for virtues he lacks

is, to a noble man of sense, reproach and shame.

So offer your petitioner a bucket of kindness, filling it,

even if baked-clay stones come to you from the green sky.
