تُحِلُّyou deem lawful إِذاwhen اِستَرَبتُI grow suspicious بِكَof you اِهتِضاميmy being wronged
وَأَنتَwhile you فَعَلتَhave done أَفعالَthe deeds المُريبِof one arousing suspicion
You deem it lawful to wrong me when I suspect you,
When I feel close to you, my misgivings dissolve,
though you have acted like one who arouses suspicion.
Yet you have acted suspiciously.
ضَريبُكَyour peer فيamong بَنيthe sons of الدُنياthis world كَثيرٌmany
وَعَزَّand is exalted اللَهُGod رَبُّكَyour Lord عَنbeyond ضَريبِa peer
Many are your peers among the sons of this world,
In worldly affairs you have ample means.
while God, your Lord, is exalted beyond any peer.
Your Lord is free of need.
وَماand not العُلَماءُthe learned وَالجُهّالُand the ignorant إِلّاexcept
قَريبٌclose حينَwhen تَنظُرُyou look مِنfrom قَريبِnearby
And the learned and the ignorant are but
The wise and the ignorant are all alike
near equals, when you look closely.
When seen from up close.
مَتىwhen ماever يَأتِنيcomes to me أَجَليmy appointed hour بِأَرضيin my land
فَنادِthen announce عَلىover الجَنازَةِthe funeral لِلغَريبِfor the stranger
Whenever my appointed hour comes to me in my own land,
When my time comes in my land,
then announce the funeral as a stranger's.
Call the stranger to my funeral.
أَكاشِرُI smile at مَنwhoever لَقيتُI meet عَلىwith حِذارٍcaution
وَلَيسَand there is not عَلىadhering to اِعتِقاديmy belief مِنany عَريبِperson
I smile at those I meet, on my guard,
I befriend those I meet with caution,
and not a soul shares my beliefs.
Not relying on ties of kinship.
