They have lit lamps with dark-red wine that loosened bridles,

yet never contemplated bridling or saddling.

They take their morning draught while the rooster’s eye still sleeps,

of heady wine, like the rooster’s eye in color.

It crept like ants through their fingertips,

its roving influence coursing through the company’s heads.

It relieves them of care—no, rather, they are made

more miserable by anxious thoughts that never intended relief.

They did not know that decrees of fate would bring them down

by force from atop palaces and towers.

Nor do I see ranks of excellence as any help

to a man once he is hurried onward to be shrouded.

As for life, I do not hope for its extra gifts,

but before my God I am fearful and hopeful:

Lord of al-Simāk, and Lord of the rising sun,

and of every radiant star that emerges in the darkness.
