Time's later days efface its earlier ones.

So let no one prolong my weariness with this reproach.

The disease of life is ancient; there is no cure for it.

Hippocrates was not free of sickness and pains.

Those are the Jews—is there a penitent among them?

And the Sabians; each is ignorant, swayed by desire.

And humankind ranges from plenty to want,

Like wild beasts between drought and abundance.

They have not established their religion's foundation by reasoning,

So as to judge between Rafidis and Nasibis.

The Corner Stone, say some whom I do not name,

Is nothing but a remnant of idols and altar-stones.

I never ask Time to undo a stumble.

Let it bring whatever it wills: honey is like bitter sap.
