I struggle in an unlined garment through the winter;
I struggle at noon when I yearn
such is the struggle and frontier vigil of one like me.
And that is the struggle of one like me and devotion

Kanun has passed; throughout it I never used
The month of January has passed in which
hot water—so come forward, Subat!
I did not use hot water, so move on O youth
تُشابِهُresembles أَنفُسَthe souls of الحَشَراتِthe insects نَفسيmy soul

My soul resembles the souls of insects:
My soul resembles the souls of insects
they have a bond with summer.
They have an attachment in summer
لَقَدindeed رَقَدَslept المَعاشِرُthe peoples فيin ثَراهُمtheir soil
فَماso not هَبَّawoke الجِعادُthe curly-haired وَلاnor السِباطُthe straight-haired
The peoples have indeed lain asleep in their soil;
The companies have certainly slept in their beds
so neither the curly-haired nor the straight-haired have awakened.
So neither the locusts nor the lions have risen
