ياO لَهفَanguish نَفسيmy soul عَلىover أَنّيthat I رَجَعتُI returned إِلىto
هَذيthese البِلادِthe lands وَلَمand did not أَهلِكI perish بِبَغداذاin Baghdad
Oh, how my soul grieves that I returned to
these lands and did not perish in Baghdad!
إِذاwhenever رَأَيتُI see أُموراًthings لاdo not تُوافِقُنيsuit me
قُلتُI say الإِيابُthe return إِلىto الأَوطانِnative lands أَدّىbrought about ذاthis
Whenever I see things that do not suit me,
I say, 'Returning to my homeland brought this about.'
