    Ṣāliḥ has turned hostile; so the Ḍibāb of Qays

    are lizards wary of being hunted.

    For they have departed, not driven by any cry

    to frighten them, nor pierced by a shaft.

    Surely a horseman's blow on a day of battle,

    sending your soul flying with fragments of your skull,

    وَمَوتٍ بَعدَ ذاكَ عَلى الفِراشِ

    is easier on you than a long sickness

    and death thereafter upon the bed;

    and so is a death like Abū Dhuʾayb's,

    and a snakebite like Abū Khirāsh's.

    I see us in a bewildering wilderness; and

    human death refuses every briber's bribe.

    Time's lions prey upon every living thing,

    and we are now whelps being hunted.

    فَقُل ما شِئتَ في كَلبَي هِراشِ

    The two opponents set about tugging over a matter;

    so say what you will of two dogs in a fight.

    Like fruits, though they have incurred no sins,

    while the spears of strife are clashing:

    so at times their descent is traced to Maʿadd,

    and at times their descent is traced to Irāsh.
