The world's companion is abased and trodden underfoot,

Even if, in his day, he is called "the well-supported prince."

And some calamity is bound to strike his heart

With an arrow, so the hunter becomes the hunted.

I have lived on, and though living on is dear,

Yet I wished that life would grow no longer.

And I journeyed, my fetter firmly fastened by life's vicissitudes,

Just as a line of poetry travels, though it is bound.

And life is but like a building: if it grows

Beyond its limit, it is a lofty, towering structure.
