لِخَمسٍ وَعَشرٍ لا يُحَسُّ لَها جَذرُ
Singing-girls became five and ten upon a staff—
Songstresses numbered five and ten upon a staff,
five and ten whose root could not be perceived.
Of five and ten, with no perceptible root.

They decked themselves in pearls, after collars of darkness—
They adorned themselves with beads after collars of deep darkness,
ancient darkness; and dew was among those who fashioned those pearls.
Age-old; and those beads are the handiwork of dew.

Umm Nāhiḍ spoke profusely that day
Indeed, Umm Nahid—the fledgling’s mother—was profuse that day
in rhymed prose, until idle chatter itself grew weary of her speech.
In cooing, until even babble grew weary of her speech.

She had been excused for her lament and her song;
And she had been excused for her lamenting and her singing,
but when she prolonged them both, the excuse was void.
But when she prolonged both, the excuse no longer held.
