عَرَفتُ مِن أُمِّ دَفرٍ شيمَةً عَجَباً

عَرَفتُ مِن أُمِّ دَفرٍ شيمَةً عَجَباً

دَلَّت عَلى اللُؤمِ وَهيَ العُنفُ بِالخَدَمِ

دَلَّت عَلى اللُؤمِ وَهيَ العُنفُ بِالخَدَمِ

I discovered in Umm Dafr—“Mother of Stench”—a wondrous trait:

I discovered in Umm Dafr a strange trait,

it revealed her baseness and her violence toward servants.

It revealed baseness: harshness toward servants.

وَمَن يُهنِها تَصُنهُ عَن مَكارِهِها

وَمَن يُهنِها تَصُنهُ عَن مَكارِهِها

بَعضَ الصِيانَةِ فَاِرفُضها بِلا نَدَمِ

بَعضَ الصِيانَةِ فَاِرفُضها بِلا نَدَمِ

Whoever treats her with contempt, she shields from her evils

And she shields whoever scorns her from her afflictions

with a measure of protection; so cast her off without regret.

To some degree; so reject her without regret.

وَما لِنَفسي خَلاصٌ مِن نَوائِبِها

وَما لِنَفسي خَلاصٌ مِن نَوائِبِها

وَلا لِغَيرِي إِلّا الكَونُ في العَدَمِ

وَلا لِغَيرِي إِلّا الكَونُ في العَدَمِ

My soul has no deliverance from her calamities,

And my soul has no escape from her calamities,

nor does anyone else, except by being in nonbeing.

Nor does anyone else, save through being in nonexistence.
