وَقَدand indeed أَمَرناHe commanded us بِفِكرٍto reflect فيon بَدائِعِهِHis wonders
وَقَد أَمَرنا بِفِكرٍ في بَدائِعِهِ
وَإِنand if تَفَكَّرَreflected فيهِon Him مَعشَرٌa group لَحَدواthey strayed into heresy
وَإِن تَفَكَّرَ فيهِ مَعشَرٌ لَحَدوا
And He has commanded us to contemplate His wondrous works;
And He has commanded us to reflect on His wonders.
yet if a company contemplates Him, they stray from the faith.
Yet if a group reflects on Him, they stray into heresy.
وَأَهلُand the adherents of كُلِّevery جِدالٍargument يُمسِكونَthey hold fast بِهِto it
وَأَهلُ كُلِّ جِدالٍ يُمسِكونَ بِهِ
إِذاwhen رَأواthey saw نورَthe light of حَقٍّtruth ظاهِرٍmanifest جَحَدواthey denied
إِذا رَأوا نورَ حَقٍّ ظاهِرٍ جَحَدوا
The partisans of every dispute cling to it;
And the adherents of every argument hold fast to it;
whenever they see the manifest light of truth, they deny it.
When they see the light of manifest truth, they deny it.
حَوادِثُthe vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime أَملاكٌkings لَهاthey have قَنَصٌquarry
حَوادِثُ الدَهرِ أَملاكٌ لَها قَنَصٌ
وَالإِنسُand humankind وَحشٌwild beasts فَقَدfor indeed أَزرىbrought low بِهاthem الطَرَدُthe chase
وَالإِنسُ وَحشٌ فَقَد أَزرى بِها الطَرَدُ
Time’s vicissitudes are monarchs, with quarry of their own;
Time’s vicissitudes are kings with quarry;
humanity is wild game, and the chase has brought it low.
And humankind are wild beasts, for the chase has indeed brought them low.
