تَفَقَّهَت في الدُنِّيا فَلَم تُلفِ طائِلاً

تَفَقَّهَت في الدُنِّيا فَلَم تُلفِ طائِلاً

وَلا خَيرَ في كَسبٍ أَتاكَ مِنَ الفِقهِ

وَلا خَيرَ في كَسبٍ أَتاكَ مِنَ الفِقهِ

You grew versed in this world, yet found nothing of worth;

You studied jurisprudence in this world, yet found no benefit.

there is no good in earnings that came to you through jurisprudence.

Nor is there good in earnings that came to you through jurisprudence.

وَإِن تَشرَبَ الصَهباءَ تُعقِبكَ شَهوَةً

وَإِن تَشرَبَ الصَهباءَ تُعقِبكَ شَهوَةً

وَلَكِن مِنَ المَوتِ الشَرابُ الَّذي يَقهي

وَلَكِن مِنَ المَوتِ الشَرابُ الَّذي يَقهي

And if you drink the red wine, it leaves desire in its wake;

And if you drink tawny wine, it leaves you with a craving.

but from death comes the drink that stills all appetite.

But the drink that suppresses appetite comes from death.
