A bird has indeed flown off, though I am no reader of omens;
Birds have indeed flown from right to left, and I am no reader of bird omens,
and though its departure stirred in me a measure of yearning.
Though their leftward flight stirred some longing in me.
أَرىI see هَذَياناًbabble طالَhas gone on long مِنfrom كُلِّevery أُمَّةٍnation

I see ravings, prolonged among every nation,
I see long-drawn-out babble from every nation,
contained alike in its epitomes and its commentaries.
Embodied in its concise accounts and commentaries.
وَأَوصالَand limbs جِسمٍof a body لِلتُرابِto dust مَآلُهاtheir final destination
وَلَمand did not يَدرِknow دارٍone who knows أَينَwhere تَذهَبُgoes رَوحُهاtheir spirit
The members of a body have dust for their final end,
And a body's limbs, whose final destination is dust,
and no knower knows where its soul will go.
And no learned person knows where their spirit goes.
وَلاand no بُدَّescape يَوماًone day مِنfrom غَدوٍّa morning departure مُبَغَّضٍhated
سَنَغدوهُwe shall make it in the morning أَوor مِنfrom رَوحَةٍan evening departure سَنَروحُهاwe shall make it in the evening
And one day there must be a loathed morning setting-out
And one day there is no escape from a hated morning departure
that we shall make—or an evening journey we shall take.
That we shall make, or from an evening departure we shall make.
وَلَوand if رَضيتُI was content دونَshort of النُفوسِlives بِغَيرِهاwith something other than them
لَحُطَّتwould be remitted بِعَفوٍthrough pardon لاno قِصاصَretaliation جُروحُهاtheir wounds
And if I were content with something else in place of souls,
And were I content with anything short of lives,
their wounds would surely be remitted through pardon, not retaliation.
Their wounds would be remitted through pardon, with no retaliation.
