إِتَّقِfear الواحِدَthe One المُهَيمِنَthe Watchful Guardian فَاللَهُfor God أَوَّلُfirst
إِتَّقِ الواحِدَ المُهَيمِنَ فَاللَهُ أَوَّلُ
إِنَّindeed قَوماًsome people لِماfor what يَكونُis حَراماًforbidden تَأَوَّلواthey interpreted
إِنَّ قَوماً لِما يَكونُ حَراماً تَأَوَّلوا
Revere the One, the All-Sovereign—for God comes first.
Fear the One, the Guardian, for God is first.
Indeed, some people explained away whatever was forbidden.
Indeed, some people devised interpretations for what is forbidden.
رَغَّبواthey enticed الناسَthe people فيtoward المُحالِthe impossible وَراعواand they terrified وَهَوَّلواand they stirred up dread
رَغَّبوا الناسَ في المُحالِ وَراعوا وَهَوَّلوا
وَرَأىand saw اللَهُGod أَنَّهُthat it was كَذِبٌa lie ماwhat تَقَوَّلواthey fabricated
وَرَأى اللَهُ أَنَّهُ كَذِبٌ ما تَقَوَّلوا
They enticed people with impossibilities, frightened them, and magnified the terrors.
They enticed people toward the impossible, terrified them, and stirred up dread.
Yet God saw that all they fabricated was false.
And God saw that what they fabricated was a lie.
ضَرَبواthey traveled فيthrough البِلادِthe lands عَصراًfor a time فَطافواso they went about وَجَوَّلواand they roamed
ضَرَبوا في البِلادِ عَصراً فَطافوا وَجَوَّلوا
خُوِّلواthey were granted نِعمَةًa blessing فَلَمbut not يُشكَرواthey were thanked ماwhat تَخَوَّلواthey acquired
خُوِّلوا نِعمَةً فَلَم يُشكَروا ما تَخَوَّلوا
For an age they traversed the lands, roaming and ranging.
They traveled through the lands for a time, going about and roaming.
They were granted a blessing, yet gave no thanks for what they had received.
They were granted a blessing, but were not thanked for what they had acquired.
وَاِستَطالَتand became overbearing عَلىover الوَرىhumankind عُصَبٌbands ماتَطَوَّلواthey showed no generosity
وَاِستَطالَت عَلى الوَرى عُصَبٌ ماتَطَوَّلوا
طَلَبواthey sought الناقِدَready cash القَليلَa little فَمانواso they lied وَسَوَّلواand they enticed
طَلَبوا الناقِدَ القَليلَ فَمانوا وَسَوَّلوا
Bands grew overbearing toward humankind—how arrogantly they overreached!
And bands lorded it over humankind, though they showed no generosity.
Seeking a little ready coin, they lied and beguiled.
They sought a little ready cash, so they lied and enticed.
نَظَرواthey looked فيinto نُجومِهِمtheir stars وَعَلىand upon النَجمِthe star عَوَّلواthey relied
نَظَروا في نُجومِهِم وَعَلى النَجمِ عَوَّلوا
ظَلَمواthey wronged البائِسَthe wretched الفَقيرَthe poor وَأَعطواand they gave وَنَوَّلواand they bestowed
ظَلَموا البائِسَ الفَقيرَ وَأَعطوا وَنَوَّلوا
They looked into their stars and relied upon the star.
They studied their stars and placed their trust in the star.
They wronged the destitute poor, yet gave and bestowed.
They wronged the wretched poor man, and gave gifts and bestowed favors.
وَاِستَمالواand they won over قُلوبَhearts قَومٍsome people إِلىuntil أَنthat تَمَوَّلواthey became wealthy
وَاِستَمالوا قُلوبَ قَومٍ إِلى أَن تَمَوَّلوا
فَاِنظُرواso look الآنَnow فيهِمُat them أَيَّwhat kind of غولٍghoul تَغَوَّلواthey became ghouls
فَاِنظُروا الآنَ فيهِمُ أَيَّ غولٍ تَغَوَّلوا
They won over the hearts of a people until they amassed wealth.
And they won over the hearts of some people until they became wealthy.
Look at them now—what a ghoul they have become!
So look at them now—what ghouls they have become!
لَوif أَقامواthey upheld القَليلَa little فازواthey succeeded وَلَكِنand yet تَحَوَّلواthey turned away
لَو أَقاموا القَليلَ فازوا وَلَكِن تَحَوَّلوا
Had they remained a little longer, they would have succeeded; but they moved on.
Had they upheld even a little, they would have succeeded; and yet they turned away.
