لَعَلَّperhaps نُجومَstars اللَيلِthe night تُعمِلُput to work فِكرَهاtheir thought
لِتَعلَمَto learn سِرّاًa secret فَالعُيونُfor the eyes سَواهِدُsleepless
Perhaps the stars of night put their thoughts to work
to learn a secret, for the eyes are sleepless.
خَرَجتُI came forth إِلىinto ذيthis الدارِabode كُرهاًunwillingly وَرِحلَتيand my journey
إِلىto غَيرِهاother than it بِالرَغمِagainst my will وَاللَهُand God شاهِدُis witness
I came into this abode unwillingly, and my journey
to another is against my will—God is witness.
فَهَلso am أَناI فيماin what lies بَينَbetween ذَينَكَthose two مُجبَرٌcompelled
عَلىto عَمَلٍan action أَوor مُستَطيعٌable فَجاهِدُand thus striving
So am I, between those two, compelled
to act, or able, and therefore striving?
عَدَمتُكِmay I be rid of you ياO دُنِّياworld فَأَهلُكِfor your people أَجمَعواhave unanimously agreed
عَلىon الجَهلِignorance طاغٍtransgressing مُسلِمٌa Muslim وَمُعاهِدُand a non-Muslim under covenant
May I be rid of you, O world! Your people are united
in ignorance: Muslim and non-Muslim under covenant alike transgress.
فَمُفتَضِحٌso one disgraced يُبديreveals ضَمائِرَinner secrets صَدرِهِhis breast
وَمُخفٍand one concealing ضَميرَthe inner secret النَفسِthe soul فَهُوَand thus he مُجاهِدُa striver
So one, disgraced, reveals the secrets of his breast,
and one conceals his soul's secret, and thus is a striver.
أَخوa man of شَيبَةٍgray hair طِفلُa child المَرادِdesire وَهِمَّةٌand an aged woman
لَهاshe has هِمَّةٌa longing فيin العَيشِlife عَذراءُa maiden ناهِدُwith budding breasts
A gray-haired man is a child in desire, and an aged woman
who yearns for life is a maiden with budding breasts.
فَواso, oh! عَجَباًwhat a wonder نَقفوwe follow أَحاديثَtales كاذِبٍa liar
وَنَترُكُand we abandon مِنbecause of جَهلٍignorance بِناin us ماwhat نُشاهِدُwe see
So how astonishing! We follow a liar's tales,
and, through our ignorance, abandon what we see.
لَقَدindeed ضَلَّhas gone astray هَذاthis الخَلقُhuman race ماnot كانَthere was فيهُمُamong them
وَلاnor كائِنٌwill there be حَتّىuntil القِيامَةِthe Resurrection زاهِدُan ascetic
This human race has indeed gone astray; never was there among them,
nor will there be until the Resurrection, an ascetic.
