أَخطَأَerred فيin مُدَّةٍa period مَضَتthat passed وَخَطّيand sinned
أَخطَأَ في مُدَّةٍ مَضَت وَخَطّي
I seek God’s forgiveness—many a heedful man
I seek forgiveness from Allah, Lord of the grateful one
Has erred in times gone by, and sinned.
He erred for a time now passed and his errors
خاطَtraversed إِلَيهِto him الخُروقَthe wastelands زائِرُهُhis visitor

وَجَفنُهُ بِالرُقادِ لَم يُخَطِ
His visitor crossed the wastelands to reach him,
He whose separation has rent his cloak
And his eyelid had not been stitched shut by sleep.
And whose eyelids wakefulness has furrowed

فَنالَ الرِضا مِنَ السَخطِ
Parting displeased him; then its outcome pleased him,
Estrangement at first angered him, then in time
So he gained contentment from displeasure.
He won content from that discontent

بِصارِمٍ لِلسَرابِ مُمتَخَطِ
The spittle of one at play melted upon him,
The spittle of a coy and sportive girl
With a keen sword unsheathed against the mirage.
Ran down a sword quick to the mirage
