I found the people in turmoil and confusion,

Misguided, divided between Muʿtazilites and Murjiʾites.

So their kings’ business: draining and draining,

And those in authority are collectors of tribute.

And their leader’s concern is giving wealth over to plunder,

Though its plunder is forbidden—or venerating genitals.

And indeed a spark fell in a valley,

To burn acacias in Sharj all on its own.

Riding the bier is swifter for a son of time

    Who seeks goodness than riding a camel’s pack-saddle or a horse’s saddle.

The sparrow has become the hawk’s ruler,

And the lion of Taraj has become a fox.

Is there truth in this world—may God curse it—

To be sought in its pitch darkness with lamps?
