إِنَّindeed النُسُكُpiety وَأَصحابِهِand its adherents
إِذاif فاتِكُthe ruthless man القَومِthe people لَمdid not يَرتَحِfeel pity
Indeed, devotion and all its fellowship—
Indeed, piety and its adherents—
if that company passes you by, there is no rest.
if the ruthless man among the people feels no pity.
وَإِنand if قَرَعَknocked on البابَthe door غاوٍa wayward man عَلَيupon
كَyou فَزِدهُthen give it more وِثاقاًfastening وَلاand do not تَفَتَحِopen
And if some wayward soul knocks at your door,
And if a wayward man knocks at your door,
bolt it more firmly, and do not open.
then fasten it more firmly, and do not open it.
أَخوكَyour brother اِمرُؤٌa man يَستَحيهِfeels shy before him الصَthe frien- (split word)
ديقُ-d (completing 'friend') وَآفَتُهُand his bane أَنَّهُthat he يَستَحيfeels shy
Your brother is a man before whom a friend
Your brother is a man before whom a friend
feels shy; his flaw is that he himself is shy.
feels shy; and his bane is that he himself feels shy.
رَأَيتُI saw الفَتىthe young man يُلتَحىis stripped of bark غُصنُهُhis branch
فَيَهلِكُso he perishes مِنfrom قَبلِbefore أَنthat يَلتَحيhe grows a beard
I have seen a young man's branch stripped of bark,
I have seen the young man's branch stripped of its bark,
and he perishes before ever growing a beard.
so he perishes before he grows a beard.
وَماand whatever كَتَبَتهُhas written it يَدٌa hand لِلزَمانِfor Time
فَعَنthen by يَدِهِits hand مَرَّةًat some time يَمتَحيis erased
Whatever a hand writes for Time
And whatever a hand has written for Time
is, by Time's own hand, erased in turn.
is one day erased by its hand.
وَكَمand how many بَدَأَbegan الحَيُّthe living man فيin حاجَةٍa task
فَأَعجَلَهُthen cut him short قَدَرٌa fate يَنتَحيbearing down on him
How many a living man has embarked upon an errand,
And how many a living man has begun a task,
only for advancing fate to overtake him—
only for a fate bearing down on him to cut him short,
كَماjust as مُلِئَwas filled الغَربُthe large bucket مِنfrom مائِهِits water
وَخُلِّيَand was left فيin الجَفرِthe well لَمwas not يُمتَحِdrawn up
just as the great well-bucket, filled with water,
just as the large bucket was filled with its water
is left in the well, never drawn up.
and left in the well without being drawn up.
