A Westerner professed religion through an assumed creed,
and an Easterner countered with a feigned profession.
فَصَمتاًthen silence إِنif أَرَدتُمyou wish أَوor مَقالاًspeech
فَماfor there is no فيin هَذِهِthis الدُنِّياworld تَقِيُّpious person
Then choose silence, if you wish, or speech,
for no one in this world is pious.
نَقاءُcleanness of لِباسِناour clothing فيهاin it كَثيرٌabundant
وَلَيسَand there is no لِأَهلِهاfor its people عِرضٌhonor نَقِيُّunblemished
Our clothing in it is very clean,
yet its people have no unblemished honor.
وَإِنand even if رُقِّيَis raised الفَتىthe young man رُتَبَranks of المعاليlofty honors
فَمِثلُthen like هُبوطِهِhis descent ذاكَthat الرُقِيُّascent
And even if a young man is raised to exalted ranks,
that ascent is like his descent.
وَيَحسَبُand thinks بَعضُناsome of us أَنthat قدalready أَتاهُhas come to him
نَعيمٌbliss وَهوَyet he لَوif يَدريhe knew شَقِيُّwretched
And someone among us thinks that there has come to him
bliss—yet he is wretched, if he only knew.
وَأَعوَزَناand has been lacking for us بَياضُwhiteness of العَيشِlife فيهاin it
وَلَمand did not يُعوِزprove lacking بَياضٌwhiteness مَفرِقِيُّof the hair’s parting
And the whiteness of life in it has eluded us,
yet whiteness at the hair’s parting has not been lacking.
