خَيرٌbetter لِنَفسِكَfor your soul مِنthan ثَلاثَةِthree أَكُؤسِcups
A three-day fever in the heat of illness
is better for your soul than three cups.

ساقَتhas driven بِأَنعامِهاwith its livestock طَويلَlong الأَبُؤسِthe miseries
Never drink wine, for it is wayward:
it has driven its herds through prolonged misery.

How strange we are, and those gone before! Our feet
walk over their bodies and heads.

And those after us will surely do the same to us.
Indeed, Death's arrows are in the bows.

فَغَداso became الرَئيسُthe chief كَأَنَّهُas though he لَمdid not يَرأَسِrule
The young man ruled for a time, and his death ruled;
so the chief became as though he had never ruled.
