A man of fifty, clasped by ninety’s necklace,

which brings him a share of death.

    He complains of life’s harshness,

and I think death harsher than life.

Let the man of faith and chastity fear

a remark from an ignorant man who seeks favor.

The goldsmith casts glass, but cannot

    cast pearls if they shatter.

The young man blazes; how often has Sirius flared

as fuel in a darkness ablaze!

How might I be atop a lofty mountain

and graze among wild beasts on myrtle and wild pomegranate?
