لَقَدindeed لَجَنتbecame mired بِالمالِin wealth خَوصاءُhollow-eyed she-camel ضامِرٌgaunt
وَكَيفَand how لَهاfor her أَنَّsince اللُجَينَsilver لَجينُmire
A hollow-eyed, gaunt she-camel has indeed become mired in wealth;
And how could she avoid it, when silver is mire?

We are children of this earth, so do not lie awake
Secretly anguished at being called mixed-blood.
حَياتِيَmy life تَعذيبٌtorment وَمَوتِيَand my death راحَةٌrest
وَكُلُّand every اِبنِchild of أُنثىa woman فيin التُرابِthe earth سَجينُimprisoned
My life is torment, and my death is rest;
Every child of woman is a prisoner in the earth.
أَقَبريis my grave بِوَهدٍin a hollow أَمor وَجينٍfirm raised ground أَحُلُّهُshall I inhabit it
فَإِنَّfor indeed أَديمَskin الآدَمِيِّthe human being’s وَجينُfirm raised ground
Will my grave be in a hollow or on firm, raised ground?
For even a human being’s skin is firm, raised ground.
