سَأَخرُجُ بِالكَراهَةِ مِن زَماني

سَأَخرُجُ بِالكَراهَةِ مِن زَماني

وَفي كَشحِيٍّ مِن يَدِهِ قِطاعُ

وَفي كَشحِيٍّ مِن يَدِهِ قِطاعُ

I shall leave my time reluctantly,

And in my flank are gashes from its hand.

وَما زالَ البَقاءُ يُرِثُّ حَبليَ

وَما زالَ البَقاءُ يُرِثُّ حَبليَ

إِلى أَن حانَ لِلمَرَسِ اِنقِطاعُ

إِلى أَن حانَ لِلمَرَسِ اِنقِطاعُ

And life has never ceased to fray my rope,

Until the time came for the cords to break.

لَبيبُ القَومِ تَألَفُهُ الرَزايا

لَبيبُ القَومِ تَألَفُهُ الرَزايا

وَيَأمُرُ بِالرَشادِ فَلا يُطاعُ

وَيَأمُرُ بِالرَشادِ فَلا يُطاعُ

Calamities befriend the wise man of the people,

And he enjoins right conduct, yet is not obeyed.

فَلا تَأمَل مِنَ الدُنِّيا صَلاحاً

فَلا تَأمَل مِنَ الدُنِّيا صَلاحاً

فَذاكَ هُوَ الَّذي لا يُستَطاعُ

فَذاكَ هُوَ الَّذي لا يُستَطاعُ

So do not hope for goodness from this world,

For that is what cannot be achieved.
