I did not know you بَلrather عَرَفتُكَI knew you ماnot خُشوعيmy humble submission
لِغَيرِكَto anyone other than you بَينَbetween عِرفانيmy knowledge وَجَهليand my ignorance
I did not know you—rather, I knew you; my humble submission is not
to anyone but you, between my knowledge and my ignorance.
سَأَلتُكَI asked you أَنto تَمُنَّbestow favor عَلَيَّupon me شَيخاًas an old man
وَفيكَand on your account حَمَلتُI bore رُعبَthe dread of فَتىًa young man وَكَهلِand a middle-aged man
I asked you to bestow favor on me in my old age,
and on your account I bore dread in youth and middle age.
وَلَمand did not تَعجَلhasten بِمُهلِكِيَwith my destruction المَناياthe fates

And the fates did not hasten my destruction,
yet my reprieve and respite have grown long.

وَأَتبِعand follow that up ذاكَthat ليfor me بِشُرورِwith the evils of أَهليmy family
In your kindness, shelter me from the evil of my own soul,
and add to that, for me, protection from my family's evils.

So suppose I were Razin in my praise,
seeking the bounties of al-Hasan ibn Sahl.
